Tree Species Composition in Mixed Plantations Influences Plant Growth, Intrinsic Water Use Efficiency and Soil Carbon Stock

چکیده
Species interactions in mixed plantations can influence tree growth, resources capture and soil fertility of the stands. A combined approach tree-ring analyses carbon stable isotope was used to check growth water use efficiency two species, Populus alba L. Juglans regia L., intercropped with each other N-fixing or competitive production species. Furthermore, were performed understand how different intercropping systems characteristics, particular stock. Dendrochronological data showed that during first years, principal species favored by intercropping. This positive effect decreased following years most stands, due light competition crown companion Carbon P. J. had highest intrinsic when growing Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb, a shrubby shallow root system favors non-competitive exploitation resources. Finally, Corylus avellana promoted C Our findings confirmed importance consider plantation dynamics wood formation long-run apply appropriate thinning pruning interventions counteract interspecific competition.

Large variation in whole-plant water-use efficiency among tropical tree species.
It is well known that whole-plant water-use efficiency (transpiration efficiency of carbon gain, TE(C)) varies among plant species with different photosynthetic pathways. However, less is known of such variation among tree species within the C(3) group. Here we measured the TE(C) of seven C(3) tropical tree species. Isotopic analyses (delta(13)C, delta(18)O, and delta(15)N) and elemental analys...
متن کاملAccelerated soil carbon turnover under tree plantations limits soil carbon storage
The replacement of native forests by tree plantations is increasingly common globally, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. Improving our understanding of the long-term effects of this replacement on soil organic carbon (SOC) remains paramount for effectively managing ecosystems to mitigate anthropogenic carbon emissions. Meta-analyses imply that native forest replacement usually reduc...
متن کاملThe Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...
متن کاملEffects of irrigation on water use and water use efficiency in two fast growing Eucalyptus plantations
Eucalyptus plantations occupy almost 20 million ha worldwide and exceed 3.7 million ha in Brazil alone. Improved genetics and silviculture have led to as much as a three-fold increase in productivity in Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil and the large land area occupied by these highly productive ecosystems raises concern over their effect on local water supplies. As part of the Brazil Potential ...
متن کاملForest Management Influences Aboveground Carbon and Tree Species Diversity in Myanmar’s Mixed Deciduous Forests
Declines in the global extent and condition of tropical forests have reduced carbon storage potential and caused biodiversity loss. However, the magnitude of these problems within individual countries may depend on the extent of the reserved forest estate, and the particular rules put in place to manage resource use in these areas. To test this hypothesis, aboveground carbon stocks and indices ...
